Where Is Your Faith?

Read Luke 8:22-25 on ESV.org

The trip begins with a plain instruction. 22"Let us go across to the other side of the lake." Jesus himself gave the destination. He set the crossing in motion, and then, in one of the more human details in this Gospel, 23"as they sailed he fell asleep." Exhaustion is no failure of trust. Even the Son of God, fully human, needed rest, and he took it in the middle of an assignment he had given.

The Sea of Galilee sits in a basin ringed by hills, and violent windstorms could drop onto it with almost no warning. 23"a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger." Several of these disciples were fishermen who had spent their working lives on this lake, and even they are terrified. The scene echoes an older story almost too closely to be coincidence, a boat, a sudden storm, a man asleep below while everyone else panics, and a sea that finally goes still. Jonah slept through his storm out of despair, running from God. Jesus sleeps through his out of simple exhaustion, already obedient to where God had sent him.

Their cry when they wake him is honest and unpolished. 24"Master, Master, we are perishing!" It is the raw fact of their fear, repeated for emphasis. Jesus' response is almost startling in its simplicity. He 24"rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm." Luke has already used the same verb for how Jesus silenced an unclean spirit and dealt with a fever. The authority that commanded demons and sickness now commands the weather, with no more apparent effort than either of the earlier scenes required.

Then the question that lingers longer than the miracle. 25"Where is your faith?" Jesus wants to know where their trust was during those minutes. They had watched him heal the sick, cast out demons, and raise a widow's dead son over the past several chapters. Yet in a boat he had told them to enter, with him only feet away, their faith seems to have evaporated the moment danger arrived. The question is a searching diagnosis, the kind a teacher asks a student who knows the material and panicked when the test came.

Their answer is a fresh wave of fear, now mixed with wonder. 25"Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?" They had followed him for his teaching and his power over bodies and spirits. This crossing adds something they had not reckoned with. The voice that forgave sins and cast out demons also holds authority over creation itself, the wind and the water that had just threatened to drown them. It is a larger Jesus than the one they thought they were following that morning, and they discover him at the moment their own faith runs out.

Two things follow. The storm came on an assignment he gave, so obedience does not guarantee a calm crossing. And his presence in the boat mattered more than the weather did. If you are in the middle of a storm you did not choose, the question he asks is still the kindest one, where has your faith gone, and the answer he wants is that it belongs in the boat with him.

Prayer

Father, thank you for a Son who commands wind and water as easily as sickness and demons, whose authority reaches over every storm we will face. When our faith runs dry in danger, meet our honest cry as you met theirs, with a question that helps us find where our faith is. Calm what needs calming in us today, and let the calm teach us who you are. In Jesus' name, amen.
